Chapter 24
Promise had come home from the club and pretty much locked herself in Toyaâs room, still crying, angry and upset with me. But I was equally upset, and I knew we needed to talk sooner than later. I had to make some things clear. I was not concerned about Money and what he did with his own life. He could jump off the Golden Gate Bridge and I would not blink. But my sister was a whole other matter. And no, I was not sorry for cracking his jaw with Marloâs nine-millimeter, nor did I regret it. Promise would have to get over that. Because that was the least harm I would do to him. I was capable of so much more and he almost found out firsthand.
The drinking I had done at the club had put me down not long after we had arrived back at the Ritz to our presidential suite. And I welcomed the rest. But speaking to her was what I had planned to first thing in the morning. My eyes popped open suddenly and I realized it was a new day and I welcomed it. My bladder was so full I bolted out of the bed to my private bathroom. Flushing the toilet, I walked over to the sink and stared in the mirror at myself. My face was still red from the night before. Despair was still on my face. The thought of my sister getting hooked on drugs was just something I could not handle or would not handle well. Hell, I didnât even want to think about it.
Reaching for the faucet, I started the water then reached for my toothbrush, then a hand towel to wash my face. I allowed the water to soak the towel. The hot towel on my face woke me up and rejuvenated me a bit, and I was glad of that. Back in my room I picked my phone and to my surprise it was one oâclock in the afternoon. I could not believe I had slept that long with no interruption. I opened the door to my suite to find Toya and Reese in the kitchen.
Both holding a glass in their hand I could tell they were drinking mimosas. The solemn look on their faces told me something was up.
âGood morning,â they both said as if it was rehearsed. And I instantly did not like the sound of that. Something was definitely amiss.
I looked around I but didnât see no sign of Promise. I understood she was still upset and probably still hiding out in Toyaâs room. And I did not want to impose on her space. âWhatâs up. Promise still asleep?â I still asked to check on her well-being.
Toya looked at Reese. Reese looked at Toya. âWhat?â I stopped walking and stared at them.
âUmm. Promise is gone. She left first thing this morning. But she also left you this note.â Toya picked up an envelope off the counter and held it in my direction as I walked over to retrieve it.
